how to help a stuttering child at home?

Stuttering or stammering is a type of fluency disorder which causes difficulty in maintaining flow of speech due to numerous reasons like speech motor control,anxiety, breathing etc. Due to which, it leads to  repetition prolongation or interruptions like uh, hah, amm.

Stuttering is common among young children of 2 to 5 yrs of age as a normal part of learning to speak (normal nonfluency). It can be due to limited vocabulary. kids do outgrow from normal nonfluency with developing years.

However, few develop chronic condition that continue till adulthood. Stammering affects self-esteem and social interactions of the individual.

Children and adults who stutter do benefit from treatments such as speech therapy.

How to help my child?

 

  1. Early identification is very improtance especially when it impacts personality and  emotional well being of the child.
  • Do not fill words for your child. Let them finish sentences by their own.
  • Have patience and listen to content of speech then how it spoken.
  • Do not mock.
  • Talk slowly, listen patiently.
  • Do not ask repetative question on topics which child shows difficulty in expressing.
  • Meditation under supervision of yoga expert.
  • School support.
  • Calming down child when angry, excited,stresse
  • Avoid making them conscious.
  • Do not display your child’s talent in front of strangers.
  • Do visit speech therapist if problem persist.
